The best bit about today is that it is the shortest day - mornings start to get lighter from tomorrow onwards. Personally, I need a survival strategy for strong headwinds, big puddles and muddy trails, please? My solution to cold dark mid-week mor…

It's an important day today - yes it's only 4 days to Christmas and yes it's the last day for First Class Post, but much more importantly than that it's exactly 3 calendar months until you'll be lining up at the Reading Half Marathon. Between now a…

You may already know my views on treadmills but I'll give it to you again because I can! Out of a choice between the treadmill and the road, the road wins every time. If you are running purely for fitness it won't make a scrap of difference which y…

Hi Justin, I've just commented on Spoogie's question about exercise order that is also relevant to your question. In addition to this however, I would certainly say that you risk over training if you hit it hard for the next 12 weeks or so, which…

Hi Doug, The order doesn't matter too much but what is important is that you avoid running two hard sessions back to back. The aim is to get to the start line in one piece and too much hard training on consecutive days can lead down the injury path…

Aaron, the elusive sub-1:30. Twenty quid says you do it in 2010. Line up with me at the 1:30 mark and I'll get you round if I have to carry you across the line on my back (though I'm not sure your time would count if we did that!) Seriously though,…

Spoogie, an alternative way of thinking about it would be that your management team use half marathon training techniques in the work environment! :)

Dave, I think you've answered your own question there with your comment about sub-2 hours. If you're running 5 minute repeats at around 8:15 it is likely that you will be on form for 9:11 miling come the end of March. That is, of course, if your kn…

Winter Running Survival Guide

It's an important day today - yes it's only 4 days to Christmas and yes it's the last day for First Class Post, but much more importantly than that it's exactly 3 calendar months until you'll be lining up at the Reading Half Marathon.

Between now and then there's the small matter of putting in the training, come rain or shine. Or, for that matter, come sleet or snow.

Keeping your training going when it's cold, dark, wet and miserable outside is a significant challenge but not an insurmountable… Continue

What's your target time?

There are still 15 weeks to the RHM, but you should already have a very clear idea in your mind of what your goals are for the run.

Have you started your training plan with the aim of just “getting round” the course? Have you run it before and would like to go a little quicker this time round? Or do you not have a clue about how quick you want to do it in and are just going to “see what happens”?!

If you fall into one of the above groups then you are not alone as I’d estimate that more than tw… Continue

Progressive programming

On Friday last week I spent 8 hours on Skype with Nick Anderson from Full Potential, developing a series of 5 marathon training programs for the Spring.

Apart from feeling as though I'd actually run a marathon by the end of it, the session really reinforced many of the principles I have used for many years when it comes to program design.

There are 17 weeks to go to the RHM2010, which means that the 16 week schedules I have uploaded onto the… Continue

Nick Anderson on pacing

I interviewed Nick Anderson (contributing editor for Runner's World and coach to Louise Damen, RHM 2008 winner) from Full Potential this morning for the Reading Half Marathon Training Club on the subject of pacing different training runs.

It was a fascinating conversation and really cleared up a lot of confusion about how fast you should be running fartlek, intervals, threshold, long runs, hill runs and recov… Continue

How to lose weight whilst training for the RHM

Quite a few emails came in a while ago from runners asking how they can lose weight whilst training for the Reading Half Marathon. This is an interesting question because weight loss itself is a goal so you have to decide how you're going to approach it.

Many of the weight loss clients I have trained in the past have seen fantastic results by focusing on training for a race, rather than simply trying to lose weight. Most weight loss regimes cut calories dramatically which has a significant impa… Continue

Thanks George-I do just want to finnish before my original-so hopefully it'll be a nice warm up!
A Berrocco is a vitamin tablet-I have half a tablet before I do a long run and possibly the other half if I feel a bit drained after! Thanks again :0)

Hello George
I ran the Reading last year, and managed an okay time of 1:54, I want to improve on it a tad! What I wanted to ask was your opinion on the fact that I have entered to run the Green Park run (with my 6 year old)before I run the half marathan is this setting myself up for failure? Thanx

Thanks George - I am a relative beginner and I started about a month ago - can now do about 6 miles or so. I also have a place in the London Marathon so I am trying to find a good training plan to follow shortly - the simpler the better! Looking forward to building my distance and taking part in the RHM. I watched your video on running techniques which was useful and I'll give it a try on my run tomorrow morning!

Hi George,
I'm still running and have recently joined the Abingdon Amblers. Unfortunately the club night is on Tuesday so I miss your webcast. As you may recall my ambition is to run a marathon but I missed out on the ballot for London again this year - contemplating other events. I did over 12 miles on my long run on Sunday and felt very comfortable. I am due to do a 10k event at the end of November so I will be concentrating more on tempo runs and intervals over the next few weeks.

Hi George. Yes, I'm currently in Australia and training for a half marathon on the 22nd November. In between I'm fitting in some 10km races. I come back to the UK mid January and am going to use the Reading Half Marathon as a target to get me through the UK winter :-( Plus, I've done that one a few times before so really, really, really want to increase my speed and beat my PB.

george , i'm looking to to do it around the 2 hr mark have come close enough(completed it in 2hr 11 last month but ran out of steam) but the last 2-3 km put a dampner on it so i'd be more happy to finish strong so this time i'll try and focus on improving speed as i'm fairly sure i've got the legs to do it in 2 hrs

Hi George ,
i've done two halfs this year and my main focus was just completing them . A main prob was running out of steam but your special report seemed to deal very well with that , so i'm aiming to run the RHM with a bit more confidence i just feel i need to train a bit smarter as i'm working (12hr) night shifts month on month off , have you any advice on training in such circumstances as this seems to greatly reduce the time avaiable ?

Hi George,

I did it last year (1st time) and have entered the London Marathon this year (confirmed place). Have started training, but only in the last couple of weeks.

just doing a 2/3 10k's a week to begin with but need to get out for some longer ones at the weekend.

Time seems to fly though, so I better get a move on.

Hi George,

Thanks for your email. I do the Reading Half every year. My main worry is my speed, I am much slower than I used to be. My PB is 1hr 47mins and last year it was 1hr 59mins. I am currently seeing a physio as I was suffering from hip pain which is now getting better. My speed does not seem to be improving and my long run times are very slow. I have started doing some speed/interval sessions so am hoping this will help.
I was thinking of running with music for the first time on race day, is this a good idea and is there anything you would recommend?
