Justin/George, Thank you for the advise. I am really enjoying running especially the fact that it is melting away the spare tire around the middle a bit. Want to really train up for a marathon (didn't get a place in the London marathon this year) s…

Sorry to say I agree with George's last line... As much as I know it'd be gutting to do so, there's a race every year but if you injure yourselves, that may not go away.... Perhaps that PB will have to wait til RHM 11. Really hope your injuries are…

Hi Lisa A quick tip from me too... I find this fartlek/tempo/threshold stuff all very hard too... I'm luck enough to have 4 speeds though: 1) Slow and boring 2) Normal 3) Fast 4) Obsurd, eye popping, sprint To make it easy, I go to Prospect Park…

Hi Aneesh Thought you might like to hear from someone 'normal' too... George, we all love you, but you're super fit and know everything there is to know so we all think it's too easy for you! :-) Aneesh, me too - I did 13 miles (am training for a…

Hey Morf A very common problem for runners. Have a look at http://www.time-to-run.com/doctor/runnerstrots.htm As Trevor says, it's all about a good 'clear out' (nice Trevor, nice!) before hand, but also eating the right food. Hope this helps, but…

Hi I'm not a physio (far from it!), but would advise going to see one... They're pretty expensive but worth every penny... Do you have proper running shoes? They sorted my knee pain out within 3 days... Hope it gets better soon, Justin
February 3
Hi I'm no physio so can't really advise... Except - do you have proper running shoes from the likes of Sweatshop? All I know is that I had really bad knee pain, bought proper running shoes, and it was gone within a few days... Hope it gets better,…

it's a nightmare...I run with a couple of people and we have all had "issues". the answer i've found is to make sure you have a clear out an hour before hand and carry some toilet roll with you just in case. Good luck and keep solid.

I suffer badly when I run and have to set my training runs where I can easily run to a sports centre / public loo at short notice. I have been checked out at doctors and everything is healthy, but running gets things 'moving' too fast! can anyone gi…

Hi Aneesh, You need to take breaks as your body tells you to - if you are on a long slow steady run you should be aiming to keep the intensity to around 6 or 7 out of 10. If this starts to creep up you need to slow down, even if this means dropping…

Hello,   I am fairly new to running.  Over the course of the last 7 or so months have managed to reach a stage where I can just about manage 12.5 miles in about 1hr 50m.  However, this time includes a 2-3 minute walking break every 20-30 minutes. To…

8 weeks to go - reassess your goals

The 8 week to go mark is an important point in your training, especially if you already have a good couple of months or so under your belt. When you set out on your RHM journey you had a target in mind as to what you wanted to achieve.

Whether it was to smash your previous personal best or just get round the course because you've never run that far in your life before, you had a goal that you structured your training around.

Now there are just 8 weeks to go, it's time to take a look at how you… Continue

Winter Running Survival Guide

It's an important day today - yes it's only 4 days to Christmas and yes it's the last day for First Class Post, but much more importantly than that it's exactly 3 calendar months until you'll be lining up at the Reading Half Marathon.

Between now and then there's the small matter of putting in the training, come rain or shine. Or, for that matter, come sleet or snow.

Keeping your training going when it's cold, dark, wet and miserable outside is a significant challenge but not an insurmountable… Continue

What's your target time?

There are still 15 weeks to the RHM, but you should already have a very clear idea in your mind of what your goals are for the run.

Have you started your training plan with the aim of just “getting round” the course? Have you run it before and would like to go a little quicker this time round? Or do you not have a clue about how quick you want to do it in and are just going to “see what happens”?!

If you fall into one of the above groups then you are not alone as I’d estimate that more than tw… Continue

Progressive programming

On Friday last week I spent 8 hours on Skype with Nick Anderson from Full Potential, developing a series of 5 marathon training programs for the Spring.

Apart from feeling as though I'd actually run a marathon by the end of it, the session really reinforced many of the principles I have used for many years when it comes to program design.

There are 17 weeks to go to the RHM2010, which means that the 16 week schedules I have uploaded onto the… Continue
